Amazing Facts You Should Know About The Para Commandos

Hello Defence Lovers, Para Commandos is a special forces unit of the Indian Army’s Parachute Regiment and is tasked with missions such as special operations, direct action, hostage rescue, counter-terrorism, unconventional warfare, special reconnaissance, foreign internal defense, counter-proliferation, counter-insurgency, seek and destroy and personnel recovery. In this article we have provided some amazing facts about the Para Commandos.

  1. The Parachute units of the Indian Army are among the oldest airborne units in the world. The 50th Indian Parachute Brigade was formed on 27 October 1941, comprising the British 151st Parachute Battalion, and the British Indian Army 152nd Indian Parachute Battalion and 153rd Gurkha Parachute Battalion.
  2. The selection process for becoming a para commando is one of the longest and toughest phases in world where the applicant is exposed to sleep deprivation, humiliation, exhaustion, mental and physical torture.
  3. The selection has reported deaths in the process itself. The attrition rate is very high and is in between 90-95 percent.
  4. Only the Para commandos forces are allowed to grow beard so that they can blend easily with civilians.
    • The training is so hard that the Parachute regiment has tried raising new battalions to augment the strength of the special forces however the task hasn’t been completed due to the tough selection phase.

    • Only the the Para commandos are allowed to wear the ‘BALIDAN’ Badge.
    • The para special forces have fought in every war that India fought after they were created and also are actively involved in COIN (counter insurgency ) operations in Jammu & Kashmir. Since they are allowed to grow beards, this guys gel with the local population and stealthily kill their targets a.k.a militants and are dreaded by the militants and hence they are called dhadhi wale fouji (soldiers with beards.) by the militants in Kashmir.
    • The Para Commandos have a different style of marching on the republic day parade. they basically do not march but walk in such a way that every step they take looks like they are spot jogging.

    • In the year 2000, PARA SF proved they still have, the almost supernatural, fighting skills like the medieval warriors of India, when in Operation Khukri, in Sierra Lieone in Africa,90 Para SF operators pushed back almost 5000 rebels of RUF ( Revolutionary United Front), to save all of the Gurkha members who were about to be overrun by the rebels. This also goes to point out that India does not shy away from foreign counter terror operations.
